Conversations With Kids

Scooter and I over dinner two weekends ago

Scooter: Are you and Mom (TCFTBL) friends?
Me: Ummm....No. (thinking hell no)
S: Did you used to be?
M: Not really.
S: Did you hang out together?
M: Sometimes
S: So how come you aren't friends?
M: ............
S: B, how come you aren't friends?
M: We don't enjoy the same things.
S: But...
M: Scooter, I think this is a conversation you should be having with your father.

Jake and I driving back from the auto store this past Sunday.

Jake: Momma has a cut here (points to his finger) and here (points to his arm).
Me: Really?
J: Yep.  She punched Aunt Karen (SIL's sister) in the face.
M: Really!?!? (thinking I cannot believe that she (SIL) told her son this)
J: Yep.
M: Do you think that was the right thing to do?
J: Well Aunt Karen stole Daddy's blanket, so Momma punched her.
M: And do you think that was the right thing to do?
J: No....probably not.

I had no clue how to handle the first conversation and I feel like I just brushed Scooter off.  I knew I couldn't tell him what I really wanted to say but I think I could have at least come up with something better than 'Ask your father'.

The second conversation was just a little different.  After I got over the whole 'Who the hell tells their 4 year old that they punched their own sister' bit, I think I handled that one pretty good.
